Imagine this: near a major city lies a true wilderness, home to bears, elk, and mountain rivers. But no one is allowed to enter—not tourists, mushroom hunters, or even most scientists. The gates are locked, and signs along the forest’s edge read: “No Trespassing.” This is not a fairy tale or a secret military base. It is the Cedar River watershed, the source of the water consumed by nearly 1.5 million people in Seattle. And this forbidden forest has an extraordinary history.
Where the Water in Your Tap Comes From
When you turn on the tap at home, the water does not appear out of nowhere. In Seattle, most of the water comes from the Cascade Mountains, where the Cedar River flows. Rain and snow fall on the mountain slopes, run into the river, and then travel through pipes to the city.
At the end of the 19th century, Seattle was growing rapidly, and the city urgently needed clean water. Until then, people often became sick from contaminated water in wells and small streams within the city. Engineers found the Cedar River, which flowed down from mountains with very few people—meaning its water was naturally clean.
But clean water does not stay clean on its own. Once people begin building homes, cutting down forests, or grazing livestock near a river, the water can quickly become polluted. So the city made a bold decision.
A Forest Under Lock and Key
In 1899, Seattle began buying land around the Cedar River—not a small parcel, but a vast territory that now covers about 90,000 acres, roughly the size of 60,000 football fields. In 1901, the city officially closed nearly all of this forest to public access.
It was a highly unusual decision. At the time, almost no one in America did this. Forests were typically logged, land was sold, and farms were built. But Seattle said: let this forest simply grow on its own, without human interference, so the water would remain naturally clean—without expensive filters or chemicals.
An engineer named R. H. Thomson, one of the principal architects of Seattle’s water system, believed nature could do a better job than any machine. Cedar River water later became so clean that for many years Seattle was one of the few major American cities that did not need to chemically filter its drinking water—it only had to be lightly disinfected.
The People Who Lived Here Before
There is also a more complicated side to this story. Long before the city of Seattle existed, Indigenous people lived in the Cedar River Valley. The Snoqualmie people had called these forests and rivers home for thousands of years. Loggers also worked here: entire logging settlements appeared in the late 19th century, when the forest was still being cleared to build the growing city.
When the area was closed to protect the water supply, the loggers had to leave, and the old settlements gradually disappeared. Today, only moss-covered foundations remain. Historians and Snoqualmie representatives point out that the decision to “protect nature” was not always easy for families who had lived on this land for generations. It is an important lesson: environmental protection must also take into account the people whose lives are connected to the land.
A Home for Bears, Elk, and Salmon
More than a century has passed since the forest was closed to the public—and the results are remarkable. Scientists who are permitted to enter only for research purposes find black bears, deer, lynx, and mountain lions there. In recent decades, wild salmon have also begun returning to the Cedar River—fish that make an incredible journey from the ocean back to the place where they were born.
One Seattle water utility employee once told journalists:
“We don’t manage this forest—we simply let it be a forest. That is why the water is so clean.”
It turns out that the best way to preserve something valuable is sometimes simply to leave it alone.

The story of the Cedar River is not just a story about water and trees. It is a story about a choice: we can take everything nature has to offer immediately, or we can choose to wait, protect it, and let the forest live according to its own rhythms—for the sake of clean water, wildlife, and future generations.
