Its effects are linked to changes in atmospheric circulation, particularly the subtropical jet stream. A jet stream is a narrow zone of very strong winds at high altitude. During El Niño, it usually strengthens and extends toward the Caribbean and Atlantic, creating vertical wind shear. This shear inhibits the formation and strengthening of tropical cyclones. As a result, the Atlantic hurricane season is unusually weak: by the seasonal peak, five named storms and no hurricanes had been observed there.
The situation in the Pacific is the opposite. Warm water and weak wind shear create conditions for active cyclone development. According to the article, 16 named storms had already formed in the basin, including six hurricanes, three of which reached major-hurricane strength. The authors describe the central and eastern Pacific as a “hypercharged engine” for powerful hurricanes and typhoons. In eastern Congo, an Ebola outbreak, according to Africa CDC, is rapidly spreading beyond its initial epicenter in Ituri Province. The World Health Organization considers the situation out of control and warns that the outbreak could surpass the 2014–2016 epidemic in West Africa, which claimed more than 11,000 lives.
Ebola is a severe viral infection transmitted through contact with the bodily fluids of an infected or deceased person. Funerals, medical procedures, and close living conditions in areas receiving displaced people pose particular risks. This is why outbreaks develop especially quickly where people are forced to leave their homes, health systems are overwhelmed, and sanitary measures are difficult to organize.
In Congo, armed conflict, the activities of Rwanda-backed M23 rebels, limited access to certain areas, a strike by health workers, and intense population movement add to the epidemiological risk. Fighting in North Kivu is making it difficult for specialists to work precisely where cases are rising most rapidly. The infection is therefore not spreading in a vacuum: its dynamics are shaped not only by the properties of the virus but also by the condition of institutions, public safety, and trust in the authorities.
The type of virus presents an additional challenge. Congo began vaccinating health workers and other frontline personnel with Ervebo, a vaccine proven effective against the more common Zaire strain of Ebola. However, clinical trials of a vaccine against the Bundibugyo virus are still ongoing. This means that even the availability of a proven vaccine does not guarantee full protection: medical strategy must take the specific strain and vaccine supply into account. At that point, Congo had received only 70,000 doses, and vaccination initially focused on the recently affected provinces in an effort to stop further spread.
The common logic of the three articles is that crises rarely have a single cause and almost never yield to an immediate solution.
