Woman Spent Three Days Trapped in Car on Washington Cliff

A 60-year-old Washington state resident accidentally drove off the road on the scenic Chuckanut Drive in Skagit County and spent three days stuck in her car on a steep slope. As revealed in a recording of her call with a 911 dispatcher, the woman admitted she had been distracted by her phone and missed a dangerous turn. The vehicle fell about 40 yards (roughly 37 meters) into a wooded ravine, four miles north of the town of Bow. Notably, she stayed in the car the whole time, unable to get out on her own and unable to reach emergency services — her phone did not work until Saturday morning.

Only after three days, at about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, was she able to contact a dispatcher, who immediately sent rescuers after tracing her mobile signal. Troopers and medical personnel arrived at the scene: traffic on Chuckanut Drive was completely closed in both directions for two hours while crews extracted the woman and her vehicle from the ravine. She was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon with injuries sustained in the crash as well as from prolonged immobility and dehydration. The extent of her injuries has not been released.
