Wildfire near Seattle: Vantage residents evacuated, I-90 closed

A fast-moving wildfire in the Vantage area in Kittitas County has prompted authorities to issue a mandatory evacuation and close the interstate highway I-90 on Wednesday. According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the highway was closed due to heavy smoke that sharply reduced visibility for drivers. By evening, the eastbound lanes of I-90 reopened, but the westbound lanes remained closed at exit 115.

By Wednesday evening, the evacuation order for the Vantage area south of I-90 was lifted, but for the area north of the roadway the third—and highest—level of danger remained in place: “leave immediately.” The county sheriff said at least one residential structure continues to burn, and utility crews are working to repair damage to power lines. Due to downed power lines, the Vantage Highway has also been closed.

Earlier the same day, sheriff’s representatives described the situation as a “rapidly moving fire” and said officers were going door to door, helping residents evacuate. Fire crews continue to fight the blaze, and authorities are urging motorists to avoid the area and to watch for updates. At this time, the exact cause of the fire and its size have not been confirmed.
