As the academic year and football season get underway at Washington State University, the official Wazzu Whiskey is going on sale. The project is a collaboration between the university’s athletic program and Spokane-based Dry Fly Distilling. The cinnamon-flavored drink combines smooth whiskey notes with a spicy kick and was created as a tribute to the longstanding tradition of fans supporting the university’s crimson and gray colors. The name Wazzu and the image of a Cougar’s head refer to the university’s unofficial nickname and mascot.
A one-liter bottle costs $22.99, and the flavor was developed as a bolder version of the popular cinnamon liqueur Fireball. Dry Fly Distilling President Patrick Donovan spent about a year negotiating with the university; the companies had previously released a limited-edition collaboration. Preorders can be picked up at the distillery starting Thursday, while customers in other regions can have the whiskey shipped to Washington and California. The list of states is expected to expand later.
