Seattle residents are in for sunny weekend weather, and Sunday could be truly historic. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service forecast that on May 3 the temperature will reach about 27°C (about 81°F), which is three degrees above the current record for that day set in 1992 at Seattle–Tacoma Airport. Saturday morning may bring clouds, but skies should clear by midday and temperatures will rise to 21–23°C (70–73°F). Monday will also be warm, around 27°C (81°F), although the 85°F (about 30°C) record for May 4 will likely hold.
This anomalously warm weather, roughly 8–11°C (14–20°F) above the early-May climate normal, is tied to the establishment of a high-pressure zone over the region. According to meteorologist Jacob Deflich, it is a natural sign of the approaching warm season, with increasing day length and solar heating. However, experts warn that despite the heat, water in lakes and rivers remains icy — Lake Washington’s temperature is only 13°C (55°F) — so swimmers are strongly urged to follow safety measures and to wear life jackets.
