A 17-year-old boy was arrested in Fairfield, California, on suspicion of killing a pregnant woman and wounding six other people. The shooting took place Friday evening at a Spirit Halloween store in the Solano Town Center mall. The victim was 31-year-old Constance Hedges; police said that as of Sunday, one of the wounded remained in critical condition. The suspect’s name has not been released because he is a minor.
Investigators say the teen entered the store at about 8:30 p.m., spotted a shopper whom police believe he intended to attack, and fired several shots. The bullets struck seven people, after which the shooter fled, minutes before police arrived. The suspect was identified within hours through video footage: a school police officer recognized him as a former student. The teen was arrested Monday at a home in Suisun City and charged with murder and attempted murder.
The shooting happened as families were buying last-minute Halloween items at the store and sparked panic: witnesses said people ran and screamed. A woman nearby, sitting in a car with her son, took cover with him on the floor of the vehicle until police arrived. The daughter of another witness, who worked at a store in the mall, called her mother in a panic after hearing several loud shots. Police said the investigation is ongoing; according to authorities, the suspect had previously been arrested in connection with another shooting in the parking lot of a local school in 2025, then convicted and released.
