Seattle's first World Cup match to face abnormal heat

The U.S. National Weather Service is warning of extreme heat on Monday as Seattle hosts the first World Cup match between Belgium and Egypt. Meteorologists advise fans to drink plenty of water, wear hats, and bring handheld misters to stay cool. On Sunday, Seattle set a new daily temperature record — 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31°C), breaking the previous record of 86°F (30°C). Thermometers could climb even higher on Monday.

Forecasters say the dry, warm air mass driving the anomaly will begin to dissipate by Tuesday, and temperatures should return to seasonal normals around 70°F (21°C). However, another warm-up to about 80°F (27°C) is expected by Thursday. Nighttime temperatures along Interstate 5 may not fall below 65°F (18°C), which could also break records. Cooling centers are open in the city and surrounding areas to protect residents from the heat, organized by the Salvation Army, the YMCA, and other community groups.
