The Battle for the Harvest: How Seattle Startups Turn Weeds Into Digital Targets

While the world discusses artificial intelligence in the context of chatbots and video generation, two Seattle companies are showing that real breakthroughs happen where technology meets the soil. The Pacific Northwest has become the setting for an unusual contest: TerraClear and Carbon Robotics are offering farmers radically different ways to solve the age-old problem of weeds. Both companies believe the future of agriculture lies in data, not brute force.

TerraClear, based in Issaquah, has introduced Weed Maps, a system that uses 1.5-millimeter-resolution imagery to detect weeds as small as a pencil eraser. Instead of spot-checking fields, as traditional methods do, the company captures images of every acre and creates a georeferenced map that can be uploaded to farmers’ existing sprayers equipped with precise nozzle control. As CEO Devin Lammers explains, the approach “completely bypasses the capital-expenditure problem”: Farmers do not need to purchase expensive new equipment; they only need software that turns existing machinery into a precision-treatment tool. The farmer receives not a machine but a map — a ready-to-use file containing the coordinates of every weed — and the sprayer activates its nozzles only where a problem actually exists.

Carbon Robotics, meanwhile, has taken a more radical approach. Its LaserWeeder is an autonomous machine equipped with computer vision and powerful lasers that physically destroys weeds without herbicides. The company recently introduced its Plant Profiles feature and its foundational Large Plant Model, trained on 150 million labeled plants. This enables the system not only to locate weeds but also to distinguish among crops based on growth stage, soil type and weather conditions. As CEO Paul Mikesell emphasizes, the goal is for robots to identify any plant in any field instantly and adapt their behavior in real time, giving farmers the greatest possible value from the machines.

Interestingly, both companies see each other less as competitors than as representatives of different niches. Lammers calls Carbon Robotics’ technology “impressive” and says it is well suited to specialty crops and organic farming. But for large corn and soybean producers, where margins per acre are lower and fields are enormous, the economics are different. “Modern sprayers already have individual nozzle control and RTK positioning — the actuators are already sitting in the barn,” Lammers says. In his estimation, precision mapping can reduce pesticide and herbicide use by 80% without sacrificing effectiveness. This is especially relevant amid political debates: President Trump previously pledged to allocate $1 billion to modernize agriculture, while Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the current health secretary, praised Carbon Robotics’ laser machines as a solution to the chemical problem on Joe Rogan’s podcast.

Both companies emerged from the Pacific Northwest’s rich ag-tech ecosystem. TerraClear founder Brent Frei grew up on a family farm in Idaho, later studied at Dartmouth and helped create Onyx Software and Smartsheet. Founded in 2017, his startup began by tackling an unglamorous problem: removing rocks from fields. Today, TerraClear has about 50 employees and is approaching 1,000 customers. Its TerraScout robot collects more than 4 billion image samples per acre and can map over 1,000 acres a day. The data also accumulates season after season, making the models more accurate. Carbon Robotics, founded in 2018, has raised $177 million and employs 260 people; its machines are already operating on farms around the world.

But the most interesting aspect is not the weed-control methods themselves, but what lies behind them: Every camera moving across a field collects invaluable information about plants, soil, crop health and growing conditions. This data could benefit not only farmers but also seed producers, agricultural researchers and farm-equipment developers. In effect, the field becomes a giant dataset for training AI, and that data — rather than the robots or lasers — may become both startups’ most important long-term asset. As Lammers notes, the main source of growth is a cycle: More data improve the models, better models create more accurate maps, those maps attract more acreage, and that acreage generates even more data. In this new reality, victory will not go to whoever has the more powerful laser, but to whoever’s algorithm learns fastest from every new field.
