Seattle officials are launching a program to help low-income older residents of King County: they will be able to receive $80 gift cards to buy fresh fruits and vegetables at local farmers markets. The cards are intended for people aged 60 and older (or 55 and older for Alaska Native and American Indian individuals) whose monthly income does not exceed $2,461 for one person or $3,337 for a two-person household. The program is funded by Seattle's Department of Human Services — Aging and Disability Services as part of the federal Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program.
The gift cards are issued as a one-time benefit, and to receive one applicants must apply online at sfmnp-seattleking.org or mail a paper application by May 8. City officials emphasize that eating fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains reduces the risk of developing dementia, citing a recent study published in the medical journal Neurology. The initiative is part of Seattle’s efforts to support healthy eating among vulnerable populations.
