Notable figures in culture, sports and public life who have died

Among those who recently died was Angela Stribling, the 58-year-old former BET host credited with launching the “Jazz Central” program. For many years, she was also a recognizable, “warm and soothing” voice on Washington radio. Actor Dennis Haskins, 75, best known for playing Principal Richard Belding on the sitcom “Saved by the Bell,” died in Burbank after battling Parkinson’s disease and other health problems. Benjamin Satterley, a 40-year-old British wrestler who performed under the names Pac and Adrian Neville, died less than a day after competing in a match; he was considered one of the best performers in the world.

In Trinidad, Slinger Francisco, known as Mighty Sparrow and the “king of calypso,” died at 91. Over the course of his career, he recorded hundreds of songs and performed at venues including New York’s Madison Square Garden; colleagues called him a voice of the culture who helped bring calypso to audiences around the world. Dolores Sibonga, a 95-year-old community leader and the first person of color to serve on the Seattle City Council, died Sept. 16 in Renton. A former journalist, lawyer and politician, she served on the council for 12 years, advocating for communities of color and supporting diversity and economic development. She will be remembered for her integrity, mentorship and commitment to creating a more inclusive Seattle.
