Summer has officially arrived in the North Cascades: the Washington State Department of Transportation announced the early completion of repairs on State Route 20 — the key route that runs through the scenic national park of the same name. The road was originally not expected to open before June 19, but thanks to favorable weather crews finished laying new asphalt on Sunday. The segment between the start of the trail to Ross Dam (mile 134) and Porcupine Creek (mile 156) had been closed since late April after severe damage from landslides in December 2025, and its restoration was carried out on an expedited schedule.
Drivers are reminded to stay alert: wildlife in the area have not yet adjusted to traffic. In addition, last week the road to Artist Point on State Route 542 at Mount Baker opened — another popular route with stunning views and access to famous hiking trails. The full reopening of Highway 20 means travelers can now drive the entire route through the North Cascades, enjoying summer scenery without detours or delays.
