Maltby Cafe with giant buns is moving to “Maltby Village”

The legendary Maltby Cafe, known for its oversized cinnamon rolls bigger than a hand, is preparing to move into a new building right on its current property in the Maltby area of Washington state. The project, called “Maltby Village” (Деревня Мальтби), includes constructing a separate building for the restaurant, along with approximately 930 square meters of additional retail space, cozy patios, and areas for relaxation.

The developer is Westcott Homes from Kirkland (the same company is building 91 townhomes nearby), together with the architectural firm GGLO and the café’s owners. Kerek Edwards of Westcott Homes said the developers’ goal is to create a space for Maltby Cafe that will allow it to thrive for at least another century. “We understand how important this place is to the community, and we intend to preserve everything people love while giving future generations opportunities,” he said.

The café opened in 1988 in a former early-20th-century school gym and cafeteria building. For residents of bustling Seattle who are willing to drive 30–40 minutes, Maltby Cafe is a breath of fresh air and nostalgia; for locals, it’s a true landmark and a place to meet. When the business during the pandemic was on the verge of closing, visitors didn’t stand by: they raised more than $140,000 by staging “Miracle in Maltby,” saving the café just before Christmas.
