Lake Chelan Wine and Jazz Festival Suspended Indefinitely

The annual Lake Chelan Wine and Jazz Festival has been suspended indefinitely. The Lake Chelan Music and Arts Foundation and organizers attributed the decision to a combination of economic challenges in the industry, wildfires, smoke, declining tourism and insufficient support from the city and county. They said these factors make it impossible to hold the event at its usual level of quality and financial sustainability.

Lake Chelan is considered one of eastern Washington’s important tourist destinations because of its scenic landscapes, beaches, water sports and outdoor recreation opportunities. The valley is also home to numerous vineyards and tasting rooms, making wine tourism a significant part of the local economy. The summer influx of visitors is particularly important to hotels, restaurants, shops, tour operators and seasonal employment. However, this dependence also leaves businesses vulnerable to wildfires, unfavorable weather, economic downturns and changes in demand.

The 2026 wildfire season had a particularly severe impact on local tourism. Prolonged periods of smoke and hazardous air quality reduced visitor numbers and outdoor activity, worsening conditions for businesses that supported the festival through sponsorships. The wine industry is facing additional pressure: because of rising expenses and declining tourism, many wineries have withdrawn their sponsorship. About 10 Chelan wineries typically participate in the festival.

Organizers also said county regulations make it more difficult for wineries to operate because they limit the ability to serve food and host live music performances. Such establishments typically need land-use and building permits, a state liquor license, approval from the local health authority and, for concerts, additional permits regulating noise, parking, safety, capacity and event operations.

Businesses in unincorporated rural areas face particular challenges. They are often located on land primarily designated for agricultural use, where restrictions may apply to commercial activities, the number of events, operating hours, noise levels and traffic. In cities, restaurants and concert venues are more often anticipated by zoning regulations, while infrastructure—including roads, sewer systems, public transportation and parking—is generally better developed.

Holly Brown, chair of the foundation’s board, said her winery, Siren Song, spent thousands of dollars confirming that its paperwork was in order and considers the county’s actions unwarranted pressure on businesses. County spokesperson Jill Fitzsimmons responded that officials had heard these complaints for the first time, had not declared winery permits invalid and allow businesses to serve food and beverages under current regulations.

County officials had previously provided the festival with grants funded by lodging tax revenue, but no application was received for the following year. After speaking with wineries, county commissioners will hold a meeting on the operation of winery restaurants in rural areas. The planning commission will then consider possible recommendations, which could be followed by additional public hearings.

Organizers emphasized that they are not permanently closing the festival and hope to bring it back when economic and tourism conditions become more favorable.
