Bed Bath & Beyond returns to Washington in partnership with The Container Store

Bed Bath & Beyond, the home goods retailer known for its wide range of household products, has announced the restart of in-person store operations in the state of Washington. The first location will be a hybrid store in Bellevue, east of Seattle across Lake Washington—an area considered one of the region’s key retail hubs thanks to the upscale Bellevue Square mall and the high concentration of office clusters that attract affluent shoppers. The store is opening in collaboration with The Container Store, a chain specializing in storage solutions. This will be Bed Bath & Beyond’s first offline store in Washington since 2023, when the company filed for bankruptcy and closed all of its retail locations. The new store will operate under the brand Bed Bath & Beyond + The Container Store.

This is only the first phase of a larger network revival. In total, 22 hybrid stores are planned across the country in the coming weeks, with 98 locations in the long term. A second store in Washington will open in Tukwila, south of Seattle near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport: the city is known for the state’s largest shopping complex, Westfield Southcenter, as well as strong transportation access, making it a magnet for retail chains. Both stores will be located at addresses where The Container Store previously operated exclusively—an approach that helps reduce rent and logistics costs by using existing space, while also drawing in customers who already know both brands. The “store-within-a-store” hybrid format combines the strengths of both companies: Container Store’s storage systems and Bed Bath & Beyond’s broad selection for the home. In the competitive home goods market around Seattle—where IKEA, Target, and Amazon dominate—this creates a niche advantage: the convenience of finding space-organization solutions all in one place, particularly in a region known for compact living and a focus on ergonomics.

Why did Bed Bath & Beyond shut down in the first place? The collapse was driven by financial miscalculations, inventory problems, and a late shift to online sales. In 2023, Overstock, an online retailer, bought the brand’s intellectual property rights, rebranding as Beyond, Inc. and continuing to sell online. Later, Bed Bath & Beyond announced the acquisition of The Container Store for $150 million—an effort that ultimately led to the creation of the hybrid stores.

For shoppers, there’s a nice bonus: old Bed Bath & Beyond coupons are back in action. Until July 13, any saved coupon (even if it’s yellowed) can be used at the new hybrid stores. In addition, anyone who uses a coupon is automatically entered into a prize drawing, with the top prize being a $100,000 home makeover. So now is a great time to dig through old drawers and dressers—you might even find a blue 20% off coupon tucked away somewhere.
