Amtrak Cascades trains return after mill demolition

Most Amtrak Cascades trains north of Portland will resume service Wednesday, and all routes will operate normally starting Thursday. Rail service between Portland and Seattle was suspended for several weeks after an Aug. 2 fire at an abandoned warehouse near Portland’s Union Station. The only train canceled Wednesday will be Route 500, which typically departs Portland for Seattle at 6:50 a.m.

While the rail line was closed, Amtrak provided replacement bus service on the route south of Seattle, including stops in Tukwila, Tacoma, Olympia, Centralia, Kelso and Vancouver. The fire-damaged building of the former Centennial Mills flour mill was demolished Monday and Tuesday after officials warned it was at risk of collapsing. On Tuesday afternoon, the company announced a timeline for restoring service, which had previously been suspended indefinitely.
