Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez signed an agreement between the state-owned electricity company Corpoelec and Argentina’s IMPSA. The document launches restoration work at the Macagua and Tocoma hydroelectric plants, which are expected to increase the capacity of the national power system, improve supply reliability, and support the country’s economic development. According to Rodríguez, the Tocoma project was originally designed to generate the additional megawatts Venezuela needs.
The decision comes amid the highest electricity consumption in eight years: this week, it reached 15,726 megawatts. The authorities are also taking into account the effects of recent seismic events and climate change, and have therefore launched an electricity conservation plan to protect infrastructure and maintain stable supplies in the regions. The president urged citizens to use energy responsibly, as extreme weather conditions pose growing risks to Venezuela and other countries.
