Venezuela is going through a colossal crisis, exacerbated by natural disasters and the lack of prospects if the country does not unite. The author argues that recovery and the sharing of information must be grounded in solidarity and transparency in the management of resources. In his view, the current situation calls for true leadership to stop social and administrative decline. The government is especially harshly criticized, where, as the article puts it, the “most mediocre and unprepared leadership” prevails—where technical competence has been replaced by ideological loyalty. Examples are drawn from failures in the management of such giants as PDVSA, Cantv, and Electricidad de Caracas, as well as the influence of radical left-wing groups, which, according to the author, have only worsened the situation.
The opposition also receives its share of criticism: it lacks a clear project, strategic vision, and the ability to move the country forward. The author believes Venezuela has lost its way, and that the “supposed revolution” has turned into “involution” in all areas of public life. In contrast, he recalls the historic leadership of 1958, which he considers unparalleled and focused on the long term. Today, he says, society has remained “an orphan” without real leadership—capable of setting goals and guiding the way to achieve them.
The author offers an in-depth analysis of the very concept of leadership. Psychologically, it is influence; in political science, it is the exercise of power; and in practice, it is the ability to direct and lead toward a common goal. Real leaders have charisma, know how to inspire and convey values, develop talent, make decisions, and motivate others. Power is only a relationship, but not everyone who holds power is a leader. Real leadership mobilizes resources and meets the needs of followers. In the end, the author concludes that leadership must be ethical, serve the common good, and be based on unity of intent for real transformation of society.
