Venezuela’s judicial system continues to assess the cases of people in custody, lawmaker Jorge Arreaza, who heads the special commission overseeing implementation of the amnesty law established in February, said on August 23. Responding in a television interview to a question about the possible release of other political prisoners, he said that those who had committed serious crimes against the state and violated the provisions of the Constitution must show remorse. According to Arreaza, cases are continuously being reviewed under the law and with due regard for protecting state institutions. However, the most important condition of any agreement should be a commitment by all sides not to repeat their previous actions or commit new violations.
