Responding to reporters outside the White House, Trump called Rodríguez “very gracious and wonderful” and praised cooperation in the oil sector, saying that under her leadership, Venezuela was receiving significant revenues for its people. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and was the leaders’ first face-to-face meeting, which both sides presented as a step toward strengthening relations between Washington and Caracas. Trump’s statement also confirmed Rodríguez’s remarks: the following day, she announced at the UN that elections would be held in Venezuela. Following the talks, the countries said they intended to develop respectful diplomatic relations and signed agreements in the energy sector and on cooperation to support both countries’ economies.
