Syrian security forces have announced the arrest of four leaders of an Islamic State (ISIS) cell that, according to the authorities, planned and carried out attacks in various parts of the country. Syrian state television reported that the cell was involved in kidnappings, planting explosive devices and assassinations, and that its activities began in Raqqa before spreading to Aleppo, Idlib and Homs.
A statement from the Internal Security Forces said that, after monitoring the suspects’ movements, four leaders were arrested in Raqqa, along with several members in Aleppo, Idlib and Homs. During the raids, security forces seized ready-to-use explosive devices, various types of weapons, ammunition and hand grenades. According to the agency, initial interrogations showed that the group was preparing attacks targeting the security and stability of the region. The investigation is continuing in preparation for referring the detainees to a competent court.
This is part of broader efforts by Syria’s new authorities, who overthrew Bashar al-Assad’s regime in late 2024 and joined the US-led coalition against ISIS last year. On September 17, the Internal Security Forces said operations were continuing in the town of Al-Sanamayn in Daraa province, stating that an armed group that engaged their patrol in combat was linked to ISIS. The authorities regularly announce the arrests of the organization’s leaders and members, including the arrest of a prominent military commander in the north of the country in August.
