A fire broke out on a gas pipeline between the Shoula and Deir ez-Zor areas in Syria on Monday evening. According to Syria’s state-run SANA news agency, the cause was an explosion on the pipeline resulting from sabotage. Hisham al-Salih, a representative of the gas sector at the Syrian Petroleum Company, said the fire had halted the transfer of gas from the Al-Jabsa plant toward power stations.
Firefighters immediately began isolating the section before and after the fire zone to prevent the flames from spreading. Al-Salih noted that efforts to extinguish the fire were ongoing and that gas pressure in the area was falling. The territory between Shoula and Deir ez-Zor is an important hub of Syria’s gas infrastructure, containing facilities and pipelines involved in gas transportation and extraction. As a result, incidents of this kind immediately affect the country’s energy sector.
