Maduro Case in New York Reassigned to New Judge

The criminal case against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has officially been reassigned to Judge Analisa Torres following the death of 92-year-old Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein. The reassignment was recorded in documents from the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Hellerstein had overseen the case since March 2020 and handled subsequent filings after Maduro was brought to the United States in January 2026. Torres, who was born in New York and is of Puerto Rican descent, was appointed a federal judge in 2013; before that, she spent nearly a decade serving in New York State courts.

The trial of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, is scheduled to begin on June 14, 2027. They are charged with conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, importing prohibited substances, illegal possession of firearms, and torture. The next hearing, scheduled for December, will go ahead as planned: the court will consider defense motions to dismiss the case on the grounds of sovereign immunity.
