The court ruling granted Judge María Lourdes Afiuni full freedom and permanently closed her case, bringing an end to criminal prosecution that lasted 16 years. The decision was reported by her brother, Nelson Afiuni, after an official document terminating the case was handed over to the family by an official.
According to him, at the time the notice was delivered, Afiuni was unable to receive it in person because she was with her mother at a medical center in the capital. This measure formally ends all charges, removes the consequences of the proceedings, and fully restores the judge’s civil rights. Her case became one of the most high-profile in the country in the context of judicial independence.
