Cabello Calls for Keeping Law Against Hate Incitement

Diosdado Cabello, secretary-general of Venezuela’s ruling United Socialist Party (PSUV), said that opposition forces calling for the repeal of the Law Against Hate, Peaceful Coexistence and Tolerance had previously committed punishable acts against citizens. According to him, keeping the law in place is necessary to curb statements and actions that threaten public peace and the stability of state institutions. Cabello described criminal penalties as an undesirable but necessary measure capable of preventing the spread of extremist and fascist movements, and characterized criticism of the law by opposition representatives as an attempt to evade responsibility for violence documented in previous years.
