China has called for the protection of its legitimate interests in Venezuela after reports that a U.S. company may gain control of several oil fields previously associated with the Chinese corporations Sinopec and CNPC. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun did not confirm reports of a change in ownership, saying only that Beijing had taken note of them. He stressed that cooperation between China and Venezuela is protected by international law and the legislation of both countries, and that economic relations should be based on equality and mutual benefit. Chinese state-owned companies have been involved in oil exploration and production in Venezuela for many years, forming part of the close economic ties between Beijing and Caracas. As a result, a potential agreement between Venezuela and the United States could affect their position in the country.
