6,438 people killed after earthquakes in the country

Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, published a weekly report on the aftermath of the earthquakes and the progress of recovery efforts as of August 17. According to official figures, 6,438 people were killed, while rescuers retrieved and assisted 6,462 victims in areas where buildings had collapsed and landslides had occurred. Hospitals and other medical facilities provided care to 86,358 people, ranging from patients who received first aid to those who underwent surgery or received outpatient treatment.

In the affected areas, 59,109 homes were inspected: 34,680 were deemed habitable, 13,733 were approved for use with restrictions, and 10,696 were classified as high-risk. A total of 335 homes have already been handed over to families left without housing. Meanwhile, municipal crews have removed 528,222.30 metric tons of construction debris—25.15% of the amount scheduled for removal during the current phase of reconstruction. Heavy machinery is being used to clear streets and restore main access routes.
